General. Please note that WISC is able to accommodate groups of up to three people year-round and groups up to six people in the summer months only. If you are applying for a fellowship for four to six people, please use the application titled, "Group (four to six individuals) Fellowship-in-Residence Application".

Fellows are encouraged to make a public presentation during their residency which WISC will help plan.

Who should apply?  Scholars, professionals, innovators and entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply. WISC seeks proposals aligned with our focus areas, broadly defined, as the arts, sciences, cultural preservation, business and philanthropy. Proposals by women are accepted, as are those of anyone working in these areas as they relate directly to the interests and experiences of women.

Former WISC Fellows must wait two years from the start date of their last fellowship before applying for another fellowship.

Deadlines.           **EXTENDED to April 1, 2019   Applications are open year round. They are reviewed           twice a year with review periods beginning March             1  and November             1. 

Notification             Dates.  Accepted           fellows will be notified within eight weeks of these           deadlines, on or about May             15 and January 15.

                     Residency Periods. Residencies are typically up to four weeks long. 

Applicants will be asked to suggest up to three choices of residency dates, in order of preference. These periods should fall within 12 months beginning no sooner than 90 days after the relevant review date (March 15 and November 15). For example, those proposing under the March 15 review date should suggest residency periods beginning no sooner than June 15 of the year in which they are applying and no later than June 15 of the following year.

Proposal. Group Fellowship-in-Residence applicants will submit one application with a joint proposal that indicates the specific expertise, skills and contributions of each individual toward the group project. The group application also requires a résumé or curriculum vitae and one work sample from each group member. 

The proposal should also include: 

  1. A description of the project with a timeline.

  2. The current status of the group’s work in or research on the topic.

  3. How the project relates to one of WISC's focus areas.

  4. How and why the WISC fellowship specifically would help further the group’s progress.

Proposal Review.  Group applications will be reviewed by WISC’s Academic Advisory Committee, who will recommend fellows to the WISC Board of Directors for a final decision. The Academic Advisory Committee is made up of academics, artists, scientists, and businesswomen who are recogn­ized in their fields.  

The Academic Advisory Committee uses the following guiding principles to assess applications:

  •  Proposed subject falls into one or more of WISC's five focus areas: women in the Arts, Sciences, Cultural Preservation, or Business.

  • Subject relates to women's interests and experiences.

  • Each applicant within the group has a significant record of achievement, scholarship, or experience in the proposed subject/discipline commensurate with age and career experience.

  • Proposal will contribute to scholarship or enhance the literature or other elements, such as best practices, in the subject area.

  • Project is well conceived, clearly articulated with well-defined outcomes.

  • The group will benefit from the study or opportunities for accomplishment provided by the residency.


Confidentiality. WISC understands and agrees that the Applicant may provide certain information (proposed original work) that is and must be kept confidential. To ensure the protection of such information, WISC agrees to limit disclosure of confidential information within its own organization to its directors, advisors, partners, employees and/or independent contractors (collectively referred to as “affiliates”) having a need to access the confidential information. WISC and affiliates will not disclose the confidential information obtained from the Applicant unless required to do so by law.
